Supra A80 Vs A90
The world is constantly changing, and so are cars. An excellent example of this is the Supra family tree, because Toyota has always changed the concept of the coupe as the spirit of the age has required. The complete change of attitude is not far from the Japanese anyway, but with the last three generations of the top-of-the-range sports model, the brand has also changed its target audience over the past decades.
The new model, which debuted last year, is only connected to its predecessors from the Vukmann Attila collection, in addition to its name. The GR Supra returned to the range after 17 years, but the initial enthusiasm of the fans was soon broken by the fact that the novelty, developed jointly with BMW, was technically a relative of the Z4 and the six-cylinder in-line was from the Germans. As a worthy partner as the Bavarian brand, one of the icons of the Japanese car culture circle, without the successor to the 2JZ engine, the new generation is not a real Toyota in the eyes of many. However, in addition to the East Block automotive industry, the fan and avid collector of Japanese classics of the 90s is not so strict, Attila is electrified by the fact that the Supra is resurrected and, after photography, is determined to get a spared copy as soon as he reaches his teens. next to the others. It's all just a matter of openness, as the Japanese have made a compromise in the development of the car to please customers who lack the blood-curdling types in Toyota's eco-friendly offering. In addition to developing hybrids, it would have been too costly to design a new rear-wheel drive platform, so like the GT86, they reduced their expenses by involving a partner company. Regardless, their efforts can be seen, as in addition to the unique design, the chassis has been tuned to their own ideas, and the engine has been installed closer to the passenger compartment, plus the coupe body is only produced for Toyota by Magna Steyr, Supra on a joint production line with the Z4. , Made in Graz.
After the experience gained at Slovakiaring, we were convinced that this version also has a raison d'être as a street car. The exterior design of Nobuo Nakamura is an overwhelming success in traffic, all eyes are on the Supra, the gaze is on us from the sidewalk, it is almost impossible to park without collecting some accolades. The car makes a clearly positive impression, as a Toyota Supra it inspires confidence in everyone, envy or contempt is not read from anyone's face during the time spent in the car. The spectacular exterior effectively masks the BMW technology and clearly evokes its immediate predecessor from certain angles. His slightly loud style works best live, with dozens of tiny details making sure we don't break our heads about the resemblance to the German roadster. It's undeniable that the 1995 Z3 and 2006 Z4 Coupé can come to mind about the shape and proportions of the hood, but there's so much trouble, its practical three-door design clearly improves its everyday usability, but the sore point is that they haven't been spent for the individual design of the passenger compartment. All the elements of the dark interior, the shapes, the switches, the on-board system and even the key come from BMW, which does not give rise to any complaints, but takes away much of its uniqueness.
Going beyond that, we get a surprisingly rational car for our money, as the 340-horsepower turbo engine with the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission is equally suitable for urban mowing, peaceful road driving or sports car-worthy dynamic relocation. It works sophistically, creating a quiet, relaxing environment for everyday tasks and providing manageable performance for adventure driving. We can best appreciate your knowledge when driving on a low-traffic country road, where it takes us off our feet in compliance with speed limits with its stability, precise handling, comfortable suspension, well-dispensed brakes and balance in general. The driver becomes almost one with the car, just as BMWs evoke similar feelings, and they also agree that their advanced electronics gently but effectively intervene and protect occupants from trouble, even in seemingly dangerous situations.
There is nothing unmissable about its high equipment, although the iDrive, which controls the menu system, for example, was not requested by the Japanese. The reversing camera and parking radars are especially useful because the Supra's biggest flaw is that the view from the already bunker-like cabin is limited. Sitting behind the wheel, the high dashboard obscures a lot of the field of vision, even aggravated by the small windshield. For example, the distance between the interior mirror and the central display is only a fraction. Anyone who lifts the seat should not be surprised if they hit their head in the roof that leans against the window when getting out! In return, those taller than 190 inches can't complain about space constraints, which, along with the 290-liter trunk, is a nice performance with a sports car gauge.
The predecessors lined up side by side nuance the picture, as both classics go beyond novelty in size. No wonder, as they follow a different concept, the latter being a roadster coupe, the A70 an elegant – in today's terms – premium coupe with four full seats, and the A80 a similarly rabbit, 2 + 2 seater sports coupe, the size of the categories due to the change in their wheelbase is still similar. The 1988 vintage white Supra American version is the largest 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder, 235-horsepower turbocharged engine available in the series. It was advertised by an Austrian seller who bought a house in Switzerland with a car in good condition in its garage. It was worthless to him, so he oversold it at a reasonable price. Attila refurbished the turbocharger and chassis, re-upholstered the front seats due to leather wear, and only the 190,000-kilometer rarity needed general maintenance. They will soon be prepared for the veteran certification, but the lesser-known Toyota in Hungary is still in excellent shape. The square-shaped, tilt-and-turn bodywork looks old-fashioned to the eye today, but when it was launched in 1986, it was distinctly modern. Its large glass surfaces, frameless windows and clean lines radiate classic elegance. With a brown leather interior that fits the American market, it could also target European rivals.
Much of the technical background is revealed by the instrument panel facing the driver, and under its wide shade, the oil temperature and turbocharger have also received their own indicators. Some of the buttons and switches typical of the era also got to the steering wheel, from here we can operate the cruise control! Air conditioning and power windows also increase comfort levels, thankfully the five-speed manual was chosen by the first owner instead of the four-speed automatic. It can be precisely engaged as a bloody Japanese construction, the arm goes smoothly behind the scenes, they fit well with the top motor. The 1.6-ton Supra gives the impression of a serious car, closer to a gran turbo than a virgin sports car, while the 344 Nm of torque moves vigorously, it is not important to spin more than 3000, but its capabilities can only be exploited if we approach the 5000 range. As the turbo pressure recovers, it gains new strength, suddenly the previously quietly roaring line sounds, and the discreet Toyota shakes. We get a taste of how much there was a generous 235 horsepower more than 30 years ago. It's not as if we have to cling to the steering wheel, but the chassis is soft-tuned to the expectations of the era, this generation is even made for the Juppies, it doesn't even make sense to entice its driver to race.
The same cannot be said of its 1994 successor to the Japanese domestic market. Its 3.0-liter, in-line six-cylinder turbo engine "only" had 280 horsepower, 324 horsepower in the US and Canada, and 330 horsepower in Europe, and was equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission instead of a six-speed manual. While the structure does its job convincingly, the most important thing for Attila is that everything except the exhaust system, air filter and rims is original, which is a real rarity. One of the tuning freaks' favorites came to Hungary from England six years ago, it was repaired in a workshop specializing in Supraks, the 188,000-kilometer specimen is already past a turbocharger and a paint job, its new owner had nothing more to do. The specimen of Japanese sports cars of the 90s is as well known from movies and posters that it is a similar experience to face it as when we get to an important landmark. Designed by Isao Tsuzuki to create a uniform, massive effect, apart from the large spoiler, almost only the characteristic headlights adorn the soft-lined bodywork, somewhat reminiscent of the restraint of the family Toyos, yet expressing its performance with its wide and flat proportions. Maybe that's why it was tuned by so many people, of course the legendary heavy-duty 2JZ engine also seduced a lot of speed mania.
The dashboard of the A80 has already been strikingly cut around the driver, who is surrounded by a center console integrated with the instrument cluster. With its sporty flat interior, it far surpasses its successor, while the two emergency seats already suggest that everything here is about the driving experience. The Supra has been technically prepared for this, as it seems unbreakable off the road, the stability of its chassis and the strength of its brakes in the factory configuration go beyond what is justified by street use, not to mention the 280 hp limited engine, which, despite all bans, sculpture from the 1.5 ton coupe. It delivers 432 Nm of torque as early as 3600 rpm, but you can feel its power in every range, so when the turbocharger builds up and we approach 5000 rpm, it starts a wild rampage, as you would expect from a bloody sports car. All this is underlined by the vehement sound of the engine, even at low tempo, and the experience is depressing even on the right and left. For the Japanese, it was the golden age!
The development between the two generations is palpable, just as a different world is the current model compared to the Supreme, who has long been considered last. For all of them, other types of car fools are passionate about, and that makes them mere namesakes.
